Types of Meditation

Meditation works by focusing your attention on something.

Each of the Types of Meditation focuses on something different...

...For more information about focusing your ATTENTION and what I mean by that check out the How To Meditate page.

It seems as well that...

...the reason for practicing varies depending on the type of meditation you're practicing...

  • With Mindfulness Meditation you focus on your sensations and what's happening in the present moment. The purpose is about getting to the present moment and experiencing Presence.
  • Transcendental Meditation is - at it's core - about going beyond your thoughts and experiencing the Divine. The "TM movement" have teachers that give the student a sound or mantra to focus on. For information about a different - and what I think is more complete explanation of transcendental meditation - check out this YouTube video. To truly transcend... it seems there are many paths.
  • Chakra Meditations are about opening the chakras for more balance, health, and well-being. You use sounds by chanting, image colors, or do movements that open the chakras.
  • A Loving Kindness Meditation focuses on the heart and compassion. It's purpose is to open the heart and experiencing Love.

  • In Guided Imagery Meditations you focus on images your mind creates as you listen to someone guiding you on a journey. They expand your mind and open it to things like health and well-being in all areas of life.
  • Embodied Consciousness Meditations focus on movement awareness, breath, and energy flow. Their purpose is to awaken the body, mind, spirit and emotions to consciousness in every cell.
  • Zen Meditation The following link takes you to a wonderful article that explains Zazen a basic Zen meditation where you focus on the breath and counting the breath. It includes information on positions of the body for meditation.

There are probably many more types of meditation. These are the basic ones that I am familiar with.

This link goes to a good article that describes even more types of meditation.

    I have some advise...

I think finding out about all of these types of meditations is a bit overwhelming. So...

Why not just find a practice or a few practices that intrigue you and try them out for a while...

After you've done that... for a few years... you can see what the next thing is that interests you...

If you have any questions about meditation, please ask... I don't know everything, but I am happy to share with you what I do know.
